When I lived in
Mexico, where breakfasts are done in proper style and the fruit
is sweet and
sun-drenched, I fell into the habit of drinking fresh juices most days.
On every other
street corner there are stands bedecked with kaleidoscopic tropical fruits. Mangoes, papayas, guavas, guanabanas and pineapples are
combined with healthier
ingredients such as celery, cactus, spinach, kale, cucumber, parsley, amaranth
(a quinoa-like grain) or wheatgerm to make the most refreshing andrevitalising
juices. These are three of my favourites.
For each of
these juices, place all the ingredients in a juicer or
good blender and whizz until
completely smooth. Pass through a sieve if you
don't have a juicer and would
rather not have the pulp. These are all best drunk as soon as they are made.
Hugo's Juice
This is inspired
by the popular Mexican Jugo verde, a green juice made from cucumber, parsley and fresh cactus (it is
said its high-fibre content has the benefit of speeding up digestion), sweetened with fresh
orange and pineapple. The girls have decided to call it Hugo, which is near enough to how it
sounds in Spanish! It makes you feel fantastic.
Hugo's Juice
- 3 celery sticks, peeled and
- roughly chopped
- 3 sweet apples, peeled, cored
- and roughly chopped
- juice of 1 orange
- handful of mint leaves
- small handful of parsley leaves
- 3 slices of pineapple, peeled and
- cored, or 2 ripe kiwis, peeled
