Even freshly made fruit juices are fairly sugar-laden, but these smoothies and
lassis retain the fibre you lose when you pass juices through a sieve. I load mine
with gut-friendly probiotic yogurt, nuts, grains and seeds to give me energy and
protein all morning.
For all four of these recipes, place all the ingredients in a blender and whizz until
smooth. Pour over ice-filled glasses and serve with a straw.
1:Berry & Oat Super Smoothie
There are lots of oats in this, so it's halfway between a cold porridge and a smoothie,
a bit like a Bircher muesli. If you want a real health kick add 1 tsp acai powder, spirulina
or wheatgerm.
2:Avocado Smoothie
We used to make this when we opened the first Wahaca in Covent Garden and it set us
up for the day. It was so popular that when we started serving breakfast in Oxford Circus
we had to put it on the menu. It is sweet, smooth and wonderfully filling.
3:Strawberry & Cardamom Lassi
Brimming with fruit and wonderful live cultures from the yogurt, lassis are my new
go-to breakfast drinks: smooth, sustaining and incredibly healthy.
4: Date, Oat & Almond Smoothie
